A garden favorite, tomato plants are grown in gardens, raised beds and containers. The warm-season, sun-loving plants are often started from seed indoors and transplanted to the garden after danger of spring frost has passed. Choose from open-pollinated, heirloom and hybrid tomatoes. They're all available in many types, including cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, slicing tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes and paste tomatoes. Tomatoes may be red, orange, yellow, green, purple and striped. Some can be sweet while others have more acidity. If growing tomatoes in a container, choose a compact variety. If growing tomatoes in an area with heavy disease pressure, consider disease-resistant tomato varieties.
